HIGH MUSEUM PAPER

One of the most interesting work of art at the High Museum was Vik Muniz’s Khyber Pass. Vik is an American born Brazilian who exploits the viewer tendency to draw quick conclusions. This work of art consists of vast amount of objects he found and trash. Most of the objects that make up this composition can be easily identified. The materials range from crushed soda cans, bottle tops, drink umbrella, and plastic toys among other things. The way in which the artist incorporated, these objects are unique. Every piece fits into the ambiance of the piece.

My favorite work of art was The Lion and The Snake also known as the Lion and the Tuileries. It was created between 1832 and 1835 by Jean Honoré Gonan (1780-1850) and sons. The massive sculpture stands just by the exit of the High and emits power and strength. The lion is stands as if making a statement that I am king and I am powerful. The snake on the other hand is in submission, drained by his defeat.

I was shock at how detailed the Tericada worriers were. I cannot imagine how much time and work went into creating these elaborate works of art. The life-size figures stand true to the culture of the Gin Dynasty and China. They are true replicas of the people of that time with immense definition of facial feature and body structure. The construction of the animal appeared to be flawless although the figures have been distorted by time and the element of nature. The people who created these sculptures were true artist whose work complemented their skills.

The piece that I found that was sad is Christ carrying the Cross 1526. Lorenzo Lotto an Italian artist did this piece. This was sad for me because it represent a time in history that someone important to my spirituality died.

The piece that I was historic was the piece named The Death of Cleopatra. Francios Barois was the artist responsible for this work of art. Cleopatra was an influential woman in history and this piecein some way gave tribute to her. Cleopatra finding her position hopeless in the situation she was in poisoned herself. In her effort to find the perfect way to commit suicide she first kills some of her savants to see what means was better. This work of art was a good replication of this event.

The work of art that I would not take home with me is the Cast and Chased Silver work in repousé. Jean Baptist Jules Klagman created this work of art. I think this is a good piece but it was a bit overdone. There was too much going on with the design of the piece.

Art of a Culture

JAMAICAN ART

Jamaica is a country that is mostly community oriented. We treat our community as a part of the family. We celebrate together, morn together and defend each other. It is only fitting that our art reflect our communities and the people who live in them. Most of the artworks found in Jamaica are of places/communities and of our people.

For instance the above is an artwork is off Browns Town Market located in Brown’s Town, St. Ann. At sixteen, I attended school in Brown’s Town and lived just within a three-minute radius of the market. This painting is most likely of a Saturday. Usually this is what every market looks like on a Saturday when everyone is out shopping for fresh produce for the week. The market still looks the same as it does in this painting which reflects the 80's or early 90's.

My Catharsis

MY FAITH
The Lord is my light and my salvation
How can I breathe without him?
The Lord is the strength of my life
I am nothing without Him
My life began with Him
And my life shall end with Him
I have searched long and hard to find myself
Only to become lost again
I have search far and wide for wealth
Only to be consumed by my journey
I have searched high and low for love
Only to lose it
Looked endlessly for wealth
Only to be consume by my journey

Old School Graffiti

This is a video showing Old Scool Graffiti and what it represents and what it encompassed back then. I found this very interesting because of the way Graffiti has changed over the years. Graffiti now has more artistic qualities and more creativity. Unlike Graffiti artist back then, Graffiti artist today have more freedom to create and are actually encouraged to place there artwork in certain places.

Art and Human Nature

The Course of the Empire - Destruction (Oil, 1836)
by Thomas Cole

Here is where man never seems to disappoint, destruction. It is in human nature to destroy, create war/chaos. This is a work of art that I thought fully convey human nature as far as destruction is concerned. It embodies all that come from it - fear, anger, greed, confusion, chaos and power.

Art and the Human Condition

Sadness
By Boko

This work of art dipicts sadness and loneliness. In this piece, the image portrays someone who is at the end of his or her rope. The figure appears to be sitting at the end of a cliff contemplating what went wrong in life’s journey. The colors that the artist uses seems to draw the viewer into the deep meditation that is occurring and it also add to the intensity of the piece.
